Counselor Dispositions
PSYCHOLOGICAL FITNESS
The CNL-505 Counselor Ethical Boundaries and Practices artifact, I viewed psychological fitness mainly as maintaining ethical boundaries. I now understand it as continually monitoring my emotional well-being, personal reactions, boundaries, and effectiveness with clients. My revisions reflect the importance of recognizing when personal experiences may affect my clinical judgment and seeking support when needed. This aligns with the ACA (2014), which emphasizes counselor self-monitoring to prevent professional impairment.
ACA Code of Ethics | C.2.g
ACA Standard C.2.g requires counselors to monitor their well-being and recognize when personal concerns may affect their ability to provide effective services (ACA, 2014). This connects to psychological fitness through ongoing self-awareness and seeking support when needed.
“Psychological Fitness strengthens the counselor and protects the client.”
CACREP Common Core Area
CACREP standards emphasize ethical practice, self-awareness, self-evaluation, supervision, and continued professional growth (CACREP, 2024). These expectations reinforce that psychological fitness requires counselors to continually develop both personally and professionally.
SELF-AWARENESS
CACREP Common Core Area Standards: 2.F.s.d, 2.F.1.k
My development also reflects the importance of ongoing self-evaluation. I continue to assess how my reactions may influence sessions, recognize areas of growth, and identify when I need additional supervision, education, or practice.
ACA Code of Ethics Standards: B.1.a, C.2.a
My growth in self-awareness connects to ACA Standards C.2.a and B.1.a by helping me recognize my professional limitations and understand how my own worldview may differ from my clients. I have learned to remain curious about each client’s culture, values, identity, and experiences while practicing within my level of training and competence.
“Every client has a unique story shaped by culture, identity, and experience. My role is to listen with curiosity and respect.”
CACREP Common Core Area Standards: Section 3.B
I reflect the CACREP standards by continuing to develop my multicultural awareness and counseling skills. I consider how culture and life experiences influence each client and use supervision to continue growing in cultural competence.
ACCEPTANCE
CACREP Common Core Area Standards: 2.F.5.f, 2.F.2.d, 2.F.3.e
I meet these standards by recognizing how culture, personal experiences, and individual differences influence each client. I continue to develop my counseling skills by practicing acceptance, respecting client perspectives, and using supervision to strengthen my personal and professional growth.
My CNL-518 Kohlberg’s Stages of Moral Development Artifact reflects my growth in empathy by helping me understand that clients may view situations differently based on their development, experiences, and values. As a counselor in training, I have become more intentional about listening without judgment and understanding the meaning behind a client’s thoughts and choices. This has helped me meet clients where they are rather than viewing their experiences through my own perspective.
EMPATHY
ACA Code of Ethics Standards: A.2.c, A.4.
I meet these standards by respecting each client’s culture, development, values, and autonomy. I remain aware of my personal values and use supervision to ensure they do not interfere with client care.
“Empathy is creating space for someone else’s experience without making it your own.”
CACREP Common Core Area Standards: 2.F.2.g, 2.F.2.h, 2.F.3.f
I consider how culture, spirituality, identity, and systemic barriers influence each client’s experiences. I practice cultural humility and remain aware of my own biases. I consider how development, family, culture, and life experiences influence client functioning and use this understanding to guide case conceptualization and treatment.
GENUINENESS
My CNL-525 Career Counseling Artifact reflects how my understanding of acceptance has grown throughout my counseling program. As a counselor in training, I have improved in separating my own values and beliefs from those of my clients and creating a space where clients can feel accepted without judgment. Clinical experience has taught me that I do not have to agree with a client’s choices to respect their autonomy and understand their perspective.
“Acceptance means meeting clients where they are, without judgment or expectation.”
ACA Code of Ethics Standards: A.4.a, A.4.b
I meet these standards by respecting each client’s values, choices, and experiences without imposing my own beliefs. I remain aware of my personal biases and work to create a safe, nonjudgmental environment that supports client autonomy and avoids harm.
My CNL-515 Elements of a Successful Therapeutic Relationship Artifact demonstrates my growth in understanding how a client’s experiences, development, culture, and environment can shape their worldview. As a counselor-in-training, I have learned that empathy requires more than understanding a client’s emotions; it requires being present, curious, and willing to see the experience from their perspective. This artifact reflects my growing ability to listen without judgment, recognize individual differences, and respond with compassion. It has also helped me become more aware of my own assumptions so I can create a counseling environment where clients feel heard, understood, and accepted.
My CNL-520 Group Design, Selection, and Screening Artifact demonstrates my growth in patience as a counselor-in-training. I have learned that meaningful change cannot be rushed and that each client progresses differently. Instead of feeling responsible for immediately solving a client’s concerns, I am learning to slow down, remain present, and trust the therapeutic process. This artifact reflects my ability to listen more intentionally, sit with difficult emotions, and allow clients to develop their own insights and solutions. Patience has helped me become a more supportive, client-centered counselor.
ACA Code of Ethics – A.2.c & A.4.b
I meet these standards by respecting clients’ developmental and cultural needs while remaining aware of my own values. I avoid imposing my beliefs or expectations about how quickly a client should change.
ACA Code of Ethics – A.1.a & A.4.b
I meet these standards by prioritizing client well-being and respecting each client’s individual values. I remain aware of my own beliefs and avoid imposing them on clients.
AMIABILITY
“Genuineness begins when I show up as myself, so my clients feel safe to do the same.”
CACREP – 2.F.5.f & 2.F.2.h
I use counseling skills that support client growth while recognizing cultural and systemic influences. I remain aware of barriers, biases, and discrimination that may affect my clients.
My CNL-540 Research in Counseling Artifact has encouraged my professional identity throughout my journey as a counselor-in-training. When I began the program, I understood counseling primarily through coursework, theories, and skills practice. Through practicum and internship, I have begun to see myself not only as a student, but as a developing professional counselor with ethical responsibilities to my clients, supervisors, colleagues, and the counseling profession. I have learned that being a professional does not mean having every answer. It means being willing to seek supervision, accept feedback, continue learning, and recognize when consultation or referral may be necessary.
PROFESSIONAL IDENTITY
“As a counselor in training, I am building my professional identity by learning who I am, what I value, and how I want to serve others.”
My CNL-523 Ethics in Psychological Assessment Artifact demonstrates my growth in becoming a more flexible counselor-in-training. I have learned that every client brings different needs, experiences, personalities, and ways of responding to counseling. Flexibility allows me to adjust my approach, interventions, and communication rather than expecting one method to work for everyone. This artifact reflects my ability to remain open to feedback, seek supervision when needed, and continue developing my professional skills. It also shows my willingness to learn from new research and adapt my practice as I grow as a counselor.
ACA Code of Ethics – C.7.b & C.2.f
I meet these standards by using current, evidence-based practices and remaining open to new approaches. I also seek supervision and make appropriate adjustments when personal circumstances could affect my ability to provide effective client care.
PATIENCE
Flexibility
“Flexibility means being willing to adjust while keeping the client’s needs at the center.”
The CNL-515 Practicing SOLER, Active Listening, Empathetic Listening, Probing, and Summarizing Artifact has a different meaning to me now because I see how counseling skills such as active listening, probing, empathy, and summarizing work together rather than as separate techniques. Clinical experience has taught me to be more intentional about why I ask questions, how I use silence, and how summarizing can help clients recognize patterns in their experiences. I have also become more aware of my limitations and more comfortable seeking supervision when needed. I now understand that competence is not about always knowing what to do, but recognizing my limits, seeking consultation, continuing to learn, and practicing within my scope of training.
CULTURAL DIVERSITY
“Self-awareness helps counselors understand themselves so they can better understand their clients.”
My CNL-605 Biopsychosocial Assessment Artifact reflects this growth because it taught me to look beyond a client’s presenting concern and understand the whole person. I have become more intentional about considering a client’s family relationships, culture, environment, development, strengths, challenges, and life experiences. This has helped me recognize that clients need to feel understood before meaningful therapeutic work can occur.
My CNL-509 Social and Cultural Diversity Analysis Artifact reflects my growth in understanding how culture, identity, values, and life experiences influence each client’s perspective. As I have gained clinical experience, I have learned to approach clients with cultural humility rather than making assumptions based on my own worldview. This artifact demonstrates the importance of self-awareness, curiosity about individual differences, and the creation of a counseling environment where clients feel respected, understood, and valued.
ACA Code of Ethics Standards: A.2.c, E.5.b, E.8
I reflect the ACA standards by respecting each client’s culture, identity, values, and worldview. I remain aware of my own biases and avoid making assumptions about a client’s experiences.
CACREP – 2.F.1.k
I meet this standard by using self-care strategies and maintaining awareness of my personal and professional wellness. This helps me remain present, adaptable, and effective when responding to the changing needs of my clients.
“Patience means giving clients the time and space to grow at their own pace.”
CACREP – 2.F.2.g, 2.F.3.e & 2.F.3.h
I meet these standards by considering how spirituality, development, culture, and life experiences influence each client’s growth. I recognize that development occurs differently for each person and adjust my counseling approach to meet clients where they are.
CACREP Standards — 2.F.2.b, 2.F.2.d & 2.F.2.g
I demonstrate these standards by considering culture, identity, individual differences, and experiences of privilege or oppression when developing a holistic understanding of each client.
“Amiability creates the warmth that allows clients to feel seen, heard, and safe.”
ACA Standards — A.1.c & A.4.b
I demonstrate these standards by supporting client growth, respecting individual values, and remaining aware of my own beliefs so they are not imposed on clients.
CACREP Standards — 2.F.1, 2.F.1.f & 2.F.1.i
I demonstrate these standards by developing my identity as a professional counselor, understanding the importance of professional organizations and advocacy, and continuing to strengthen my knowledge of ethical and professional counseling practice.
ACA Standards — C.1, C.2.e, C.2.f & C.4.f
I demonstrate professional responsibility by following ethical standards, seeking consultation when needed, maintaining awareness of my personal wellness and effectiveness, and practicing within my level of competence.
